Field Trips
The Jackson County Conservation environmental education staff can provide your students or group with a
field trip that will allow them to explore woodlands, prairies, wetlands, the history of our uses of natural
resources, and our place in the natural world today. We welcome groups to the Hurstville Interpretive Center, or
will help you plan a field trip to Maquoketa Caves State Park, the Green Island Wildlife area or other sites in
Jackson County. Hurstville Interpretive Center features a smart lunch program - find out more before your field

Millrock School
Our Millrock School provides an opportunity for your students to experience a half day or whole day of school
as it was during the early days in Iowa. Reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmatic and recess; as well as carrying in wood,
ringing the school bell, and washing at the wash basin all add to your students’ experience.

In-School Programs
Our in-school programs bring the opportunity to investigate our relationship to the natural world without the
hassle of scheduling a bus. We have programs about owls, bats, endangered species, groundwater and more.

Public Programs
Public programs at the Hurstville Center and other county sites offer residents and visitors of all ages the
opportunity to learn new outdoor skills, marvel at and gain a better understanding of the natural world, and
hear speakers with special knowledge in their field. Check our Calendar of Events page to see our latest

Nature Tales-Preschool Programs
Nature Tales is a program designed for preschoolers to learn about nature. It features
hands-on activities, a story and craft activity. This is a series of programs and we
encourage you and your preschooler to attend them all.

Iowa Junior Naturalist Program
The Iowa Junior Naturalist Program promotes awareness of natural and cultural
resources of Iowa through a variety of programs aimed at children ages 6-12.

Civic Groups
Our staff members are also available to speak to your civic group – at the
Hurstville Center or other sites in the county. Give us a call to see if we can
